Ongoing Projects
Since 2017, we have supported more than 7,480 parents and their children, significantly impacting their lives and the community. These communities are in Harris County in the Southwest of Houston, a densely populated and racially diverse area; families face severe disparities in access to basic needs, early education, and healthcare, exacerbated by high poverty rates and elevated risks of maltreatment among young children.
Thriving Together
Launched in 2023, this two-year project is funded by Harris County and is implemented in partnership with the Hackett Center for Mental Health and the Children’s Museum Houston. The project aims to transform the lives of 4,000 immigrant, refugee, and at-risk families in underserved communities in Harris County by providing parents with tools and knowledge to support their children’s growth and learning during the critical early years. In partnership with The Hackett Center for Mental Health and the Children’s Museum Houston, we offer comprehensive services, including brain-based learning programs and developmentally appropriate activity kits for parents and children. Our trained facilitators deliver programs at community sites, empowering families through parent education, early learning activities, and wraparound services like health referrals and social support. This project is being implemented by 27 early childhood teachers trained on RF’s Informed Parents program methodology, Hackett Center’s Brain Builder Program, and certified community health workers.
Holistic Well-Being Project
Funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, this three-year project promotes the holistic development of 500 Afghan refugee families and their children in the Greater Houston Area through tailored services that address critical needs like early childhood development, health, and mental well-being. Key services provided include:
- Informed Parents Program to support early learning and equip parents with positive parenting techniques.
- Mental health workshops, including referral to mental health support services and counseling when needed.
- Hygiene workshops.
- Reproductive health education workshops focusing on family planning, prenatal care, and postnatal care to support the well-being of mothers throughout the pregnancy and childbirth process.
- English as a Second Language classes through partnerships with local public libraries.
- Access to comprehensive healthcare services, including medical screenings, preventive care, and treatment for existing health conditions.
All these services are culturally sensitive to clients’ specific needs, beliefs, and practices. This involved considering language barriers, religious or cultural preferences, and providing interpretation services if necessary. In addition to our family-focused approach, we have extended our program in Houston Independent School District through Communities In Schools of Houston. In 2024, we signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Communities In Schools of Houston to deliver hygiene classes.
