ONGOING PROJECTS

Refugee Career Pathways

In October 2024, we launched the implementation of the three-year Refugee Career Pathways program with the financial support of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. With the objective to equip 180 refugees with the skills and resources needed to secure stable employment in high-demand fields like healthcare, IT, skilled trades, and hospitality, with a particular emphasis on healthcare career pathways for refugee women, we will implement the following activities:

• Career Development Plans: Personalized plans will be created through initial assessments and interviews to understand participants’ backgrounds, skills, and needs. Each plan includes defined goals, action steps, resource lists, and progress tracking. Weekly one-on-one coaching, later bi-weekly, provides continuous support, including job search assistance, mentoring connections, and emotional support.

• Career Counseling: The project will work with participants to set achievable career goals and develop action plans with steps for education, training, and job search. Job application and onboarding support are provided when participants are ready.

• Job Readiness Training: This component will focus on resume and cover letter workshops, interview preparation, and job search strategies. Soft skills like cultural orientation and professional etiquette will also be emphasized. Networking events and mentorship will support refugees in connecting with industry professionals and overcoming unique barriers, especially for women.

• ESL Services: The project will provide comprehensive English as a Second Language support integrated into career services to prepare participants for vocational training by focusing on job-specific language and math skills and adapting to U.S. workplace norms.

• Vocational Training: Based on the career aspirations identified by the refugees, the project will fund certified courses in fields such as healthcare, IT, skilled trades, and hospitality. For the implementation of this component, we have already established partnerships with the Ibn Sina Foundation and the Houston Community College.

• Individual Assistance: Recognizing the importance of mental and emotional well-being, the project will conduct mental and behavioral health assessments, offer wellness workshops, and establish partnerships with clinics to provide treatment for those in need.
